Your security is personal. Here is how to stay protected.

Scammers look for the easiest target, and that usually means someone who has not taken a few simple precautions. Firefighters First gives you the tools to stay protected across every channel, whether you are banking online, using your card at a gas station or checking your balance on your phone. Here is everything you need to know to keep your accounts secure.

The basics that put you ahead of most threats.

You don’t need to be a cybersecurity expert to protect yourself. A few foundational habits will put you ahead of most threats.

Use a strong, unique password.

Avoid using the same password across multiple accounts. If one account is compromised, a shared password puts all of them at risk. Make your passwords hard to guess by avoiding personal details like birth dates, family names, or pet names.

Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA).

This adds a second layer of verification when you log in, making it significantly harder for someone to access your account even if they have your password.

Keep your contact information current.

We use your phone number and email to send security alerts. If your information is out of date, you may miss a warning that matters.

Scam calls and text.

Imposters who claim to be from your bank, the IRS or even Firefighters First, or who pose as celebrities or romantic partners, to get you to share sensitive information or money.

Protect your cards before something goes wrong.

  • Inspect card readers before inserting your card.
  • Shield your PIN even when no one is nearby.
  • Use Digital Wallet for contactless payments.
  • Lock your card in Mobile Banking immediately.

Email is one of the easiest ways in. Here is how to stay safe.

Email is one of the most common entry points for fraud and account takeover. Firefighters First uses secure email to protect sensitive communication between you and the Credit Union.

ONLINE AND MOBILE BANKING

Whether you are logging in from your laptop or checking your balance on your phone, these habits apply every time you bank with us.

Everything you need to know about security at Firefighters First Credit Union.

What should I do if I think my account has been compromised?

Act quickly. Log in to Online Banking or Mobile Banking and review your recent transactions. If you see anything unfamiliar, contact us immediately. You can also lock your debit or credit card instantly in your Online or Mobile Banking while you sort things out.

Will Firefighters First ever call or text me asking for my password or PIN?

No. Firefighters First will never ask for your password, PIN, or one-time security code over the phone, by text or by email. If you receive a call or message asking for this information, do not share it. Hang up and contact us directly to report it.

How do I lock my debit or credit card?

You can lock your card instantly in Online or Mobile Banking. Log in, select your card and choose the option to lock it. This prevents any new transactions from going through while your card is locked. You can unlock it just as quickly if you find it. If your card has been stolen or you believe it’s been compromised, call us right away.

What is two-factor authentication and do I need it?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second step to your login process. After entering your password, you’ll be asked to verify your identity with a one-time code sent to your phone or email. It’s one of the most effective ways to prevent unauthorized access to your account, even if someone has your password. We strongly recommend enabling it.

Is it safe to use Mobile Banking on public Wi-Fi?

It’s better to avoid it when you can. Public Wi-Fi networks at coffee shops, airports and hotels are not always secure, which means your connection could potentially be monitored by others. If you need to access your account while you’re out, use your phone’s mobile data connection instead. If you regularly use public Wi-Fi, consider using a VPN for an added layer of protection.

How do I know an email is really from Firefighters First?

Legitimate emails from Firefighters First will come from a verified domain and will never ask you to click a link to verify your password or account credentials. When we need to share sensitive information with you, we use secure email. If you receive a message that feels off or asks for personal information, do not click any links. Contact us to confirm whether it came from us.

What’s the difference between fraud and a security issue?

They’re closely related but not always the same thing. A security issue is anything that puts your account or personal information at risk, such as a weak password, an unsecured device or a suspicious login attempt. Fraud is when someone actually uses that access to steal money or information. Good security habits help prevent fraud from happening in the first place. If you’re dealing with actual fraud, visit our Fraud Protection page for specific guidance.
