What is a data compromise?
A data compromise is an organized theft of debit card, credit card or ATM card information. These events are typically caused by a merchant data breach or third-party payment processor hack, the theft of a computer or storage device containing card data, or a company insider misusing their access to cardholder information. Firefighters First is alerted to these events by trusted sources such as Visa or law enforcement.
Due to confidentiality requirements, we typically do not receive the name of the affected merchant or specific details about how the breach occurred.
What we do.
When we are notified that your card data may have been compromised, we may proactively close and reissue your card as a precaution — even before any fraudulent activity has occurred. This is a protective measure, not a confirmation that fraud has taken place.
Receiving a replacement card does not mean:
- That fraud has occurred on your account
- That you are a victim of identity theft
- That you need to take any action beyond activating your new card
What to do when you receive a replacement card.
- Activate your new card as soon as it arrives.
- Update any recurring payments or subscriptions that use your old card number.
- Destroy your old card once your new card is active.
If you notice any unauthorized transactions on your account, contact us immediately.
