What is Mechanical Breakdown Protection?

When your vehicle’s manufacturer warranty expires, unexpected repair costs become your responsibility. Mechanical Breakdown Protection (MBP) is an optional extended warranty product available on qualifying Firefighters First Credit Union vehicle loans. It is designed to cover the cost of repairs and labor for covered mechanical failures, and comes with additional benefits including zero deductible, 24/7 roadside assistance, rental car coverage and a total loss refund. This article explains how MBP works, what it covers and how to find out if your vehicle qualifies.

Vehicle repairs are expensive and they rarely happen at a convenient time. A transmission failure, an engine issue or an electrical problem can cost thousands of dollars out of pocket, especially once your manufacturer’s warranty has run out.

Mechanical Breakdown Protection (MBP) is an optional product available on qualifying Firefighters First Credit Union vehicle loans. Think of it as an extended warranty. It is designed to give you peace of mind by covering the cost of repairs and labor for qualifying mechanical failures so an unexpected breakdown does not turn into a financial setback.

Understand what to consider when financing a vehicle so you avoid costly surprises later.

How Does Mechanical Breakdown Protection Work?

MBP works similarly to an extended warranty. When a covered mechanical failure occurs, you bring your vehicle to a licensed repair facility. The cost of covered repairs and labor is handled through your MBP agreement rather than coming out of your pocket.

Here is what makes MBP at Firefighters First Credit Union worth noting:

Zero deductible. Unlike many extended warranty products that require you to pay a deductible each time you file a claim, MBP through Firefighters First Credit Union comes with a zero deductible. You pay nothing out of pocket for covered repairs.

Coverage availability and specific terms vary by vehicle. Because MBP eligibility is determined on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis, the best way to find out if your vehicle qualifies is to contact us or ask when you apply for your loan.

What Does MBP Include?

In addition to covering repair costs and labor for qualifying mechanical failures, MBP includes four key benefits:

Zero deductible
Covered repairs are handled at no out-of-pocket cost to you. No deductible, no surprise charges at the repair shop.

24/7 roadside assistance
If your vehicle breaks down on the road, roadside assistance is available around the clock. Whether you need a tow, a jump start or help with a flat tire, help is one call away.

Rental car coverage
If your vehicle needs to be in the shop for a covered repair, rental car coverage helps make sure you are not left without transportation while you wait.

Total loss refund
If your vehicle is declared a total loss while MBP is active, you may be eligible for a refund of the unused portion of your MBP coverage. Specific terms apply and are outlined in your signed agreement.

All benefits are subject to the terms, limits and exclusions outlined in your MBP agreement. Once coverage is in place, refer to your signed agreement for complete details.

What Does MBP Not Cover?

MBP is designed to cover qualifying mechanical failures, but like any warranty product it has limitations. It is not a maintenance plan and does not cover everything that can go wrong with a vehicle. Common exclusions typically include:

  • Routine maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations and brake pads
  • Damage caused by accidents, collisions or misuse
  • Pre-existing conditions present before coverage began
  • Cosmetic damage including paint, trim and interior wear
  • Modifications or aftermarket parts not covered under the agreement

This is not a complete list. All exclusions are outlined in your signed MBP agreement. We encourage you to read your agreement carefully and reach out to us if you have questions about what is and is not covered.

The 60-Day Free Look

When you add MBP to your loan, you have 60 days to review your coverage at no cost. If you decide during that period that it is not the right fit, you can cancel without penalty.

This gives you time to read through your signed agreement, understand exactly what is and is not covered and make a confident, informed decision without feeling pressured.

How Do I Add MBP to My Loan?

MBP can be added to your vehicle loan during the application process. Since coverage availability is determined on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis, our lending team will confirm whether your vehicle qualifies at the time of your application.

If you already have a vehicle loan with Firefighters First and want to explore adding MBP, contact us directly and we will let you know what options are available.
